Who would have imagined that the forests she painted in her youth would later transform into the drawings illustrating the neural forests of the brain? Javier Defelipe (Cajal: The Art of Science) Art has, for decades, been the most effective tool for illustrating the microscopic images captured by scientists around the globe. Through brushes and paints, thinkers and explorers of the human brain, such as neuroscientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934), depicted the most extraordinary occurrences of the mind in drawings on paper. Synapses and neural impulses occurring between cellular units in a rhizomatic manner were meticulously investigated, leading these scientists to a sublime scene: the neural forest that inhabits one of the most complex and mysterious organs in the human body. Such a spectacle directly transports us to the environmental vision advocated by philosopher and critic Timothy Morton, of a vast and extensive web of interconnection without center or boundaries; radical and coexisting, defining contemporary ecological thought and the relationship between life happening both internally and externally. Thus, as we look at the set of minimal units of our mind, we discover that they mimic the natural forest that surrounds us and of which we are an integral and symbiotic part. It is on this fabulous thought that the current research of Janaina Mello Landini, as well as her solo exhibition Neural Forest, on display at Zipper Gallery, is based. The visual artist has been exploring for decades the paths surrounding the complexity of the individual and singular in relation to the whole, creating languages that incorporate the rhythm and spatiality of these choices, visually experienced in her renowned series “Ciclotramas.” In constant evolution, Landini's artistic thought now more solidly intersects with two areas her work has already touched upon: neuroscience and the environmental realm. Each canvas that composes the mental landscape created by the artist for this exhibition space functions as a laboratory slide. Navigating between earthly and metaphorical planes, it recreates the two-dimensionality of a section made in the cerebral cortex, offering us a glimpse of the vast neural forest that develops within us. Threads of varying thicknesses, textures, and shines appear twisted, creating more organic cores and extensions. Their ends, with fewer branches than in the artist's previous works, allow us to imagine where these threads might lead—continuing their invisible paths behind the canvases. Each piece displays a different angle of our neurological forest, as if they had been segmented at various points and routes, attempting to capture a panoramic yet fragmented view of our thought. Amidst canopies and roots, we perceive the complexity and multiple possibilities of this web, which interconnects infinitely. Three-dimensional elements emerge from this narrative, as if a tree or a neuron could detach itself from this broad web. Cajal poetically referred to them as cells of thought or, specifically, as "moths of the soul," due to their pyramidal shapes reminiscent of the body and whispering wings of the insect that hovers through space. “Perhaps their fluttering will one day illuminate the secret of mental life,” said the Nobel Prize winner. Developed through the twisting of metal wires, these sculptures mimic the structures displayed on the canvases while subverting their modes of production and thought. Lacking the tension, a characteristic force in Landini’s works, their branches float through the materiality of the wire itself, evoking a plant-like being highlighted in space. As neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso reflects in his intriguing book *Revolution of the Plants*, the plant world challenges our assumptions about who the most intelligent beings are. If, as he asserts, the areas of canopies and roots interact with each other, forming a structure whose functions resemble those of the brain, a visit to this biomorphic environment created by Landini takes us inward while also engaging us in a potent dialogue with the surrounding environmental universe.
